WTF Kind of Music am I Making?
Hey gang,
This is a serious question for you; one that I've struggled to answer over the years - which has been awkward, since I'm constantly asked to answer it when applying for showcases/gigs, put music online, or even just in conversation.
The problem, as I see it, is that I play and record in multiple musical styles. So instead of telling people, "I'm a goth rocker who arranges choral music and plays saxophone, banjo and synthesizer," or "I'm a classically trained saxophonist who dabbles in Latin jazz, chiptune music and writes symphonic film scores" (both of which are technically true), I've often opted to answer with something intangible that leads to more questions.
One I used for years was along the lines of, "mellow creative music that goes well with wine".
Before that, it was something like, "I write music for insane people using magic and pencil, then force people to run around, screaming like lunatics until music comes out."
I'm looking for something that hints vaguely at what I'm making, but doesn't specify any single genre, instrument, or discipline.
How would you describe my music to others? I'm wide open to ideas and suggestions here!
